Series
Many of the books I read are one of many books within a series. This is very common within the fantasy genre where the trilogy is the norm. I truly enjoy immersing myself within a world and how better to do that when you have 30 books that exist in that world? Below are my favorite series, in no particular order.
Shannara
The world of Shannara began with Terry Brooks' first novel, The Sword of Shannara, which was published in 1977. It was the first fantasy novel to appear on the New York Times best sellers list and remained there for 5 months. Two more books, The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara completed the trilogy. Since then he has published 16 more novels in the Shannara series to great success. This most definitely is my alltime favorite and the only one I go out of my way to collect. Aside from the original 3 book trilogy, I own each other Shannara novel as a first edition hard cover.
Xanth is a fantasy world written by Piers Anthony. It is extremely punny and humorous. The name being a pun itself made by combining the last part of the author's first name and the first part of the author's last name (Pier-XANTH-ony) although the author claims it to be unintentional. Xanth was only originally intended to be a trilogy but after the success of the first three books, he decided to expand the series to nine books. Fans then persuded the author to continue writing the series with the 32nd book being published in October 2008.
The Dragonlance Series began in 1984 as a way for the authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman to tell the story of the game they were creating, called Dragonlance. Set in a fantasy world, what began as a trilogy has grown into 170 (and counting) novels written by various authors.
